Naked Eyes Can’t See Airborne Asbestos

… But The Ugly Stuff Might Still Be Floating Around

It’s well-known that you can see naked things with your eyes.  Ask any teenage boy who’s seen an R-rated movie (and they all have, even if their parents don’t know).

But there are some things you can NOT see with your naked eyes.

These include leprechauns, the Easter bunny, vampires, lower egg prices, the celebrity colonies on Saturn, and airborne asbestos.

Now, as they used to say on Sesame Street, one of these things is not like the others.  And that’s airborne asbestos.  Why?  Because airborne asbestos actually exists.

But you still can’t see it with your naked eyes.

When it’s in its solid, manufactured state, asbestos isn’t dangerous.  But when it’s disturbed, by something as simple as a small fire in the kitchen, or a little flood in the basement, or an attempt to apply powdered make-up… that’s when asbestos breaks up into sharp little shards that float around in your air.

And those shards are microscopic.

Yes, those little shards are dangerous.  With prolonged exposure, they can burrow into your lungs and cause incurable, fatal diseases such as mesothelioma and asbestosis.

All those well-publicized wildfires… and the ones that will come over the course of the year?  They burn down buildings containing the aforementioned asbestos-laden materials, which releases tons of those deadly un-seeable shards into the smoky air.

That’s why the government sometimes makes an effort to ban asbestos.  But the fact is that most asbestos products have still been legal to be imported into the U.S., and as a result, asbestos is still all around us.
